Chiang Mai Travel Guide

Chiang Mai is the capital of the Chiang Mai province of Thailand . This city which lies about 700 kilometers north of Bangkok boasts of some of the high mountains of Thailand .

Overview : Chiang Mai was founded in the year 1296 by king Mengrai and it ceded to Siam in the year 1774 when Taksin conquered it from the Burmese. The climate of Chiang Mai is different from the other parts of Thailand . Since it is covered with high mountains therefore here you would find more or less moderate climate because of the cloud cover. Ping River is the main river in Chiang Mai.

Sightseeing: Doi Luang Chiang Dao is the major sightseeing attraction of Chiang Mai. Other than this limestone mountain among the sightseeing spots you would get the charming cave of Chiang Dao , Doi Tao Lake and Op Luang National Park.

Things to do: The road Chom Thong – Hot is the shopping area of Chiang Mai. Here you would get all handicrafts items and wooden furniture as well as items of porcelain. Wood crafted products, lacquer wares, gold plated articles are the hot shopping items in Chiang Mai. You can also enjoy your evening in any pub or bar and have a massage done in any of the spas.

Dining: Chiang Mai cuisines have got something unique about them. Some items that you must try while you are in Chiang Mai are Nam Phrik Ong, which is a paste made with minced pork and tomatoes. Other delicacies include Nam Phrik Num, a green chili paste and Kaeng a coconut free curry.

Accommodation: Since Chiang Mai is visited by lots of tourists therefore here you would find lots of big names of hotel industry like Sofitel, Chedi and Bann Tazala.

Useful information: You can reach Chiang Mai by car, bus and even by bicycle. For traveling inside Chiang Mai you can hire a tuk tuk or a sam lor. You can carry a light jacket with you since the weather in Chiang Mai is always mild and cool.
